FAMOUS FREEMASONS

Most Worshipful Brother
Prince Hall
First African American
Freemason

While the early accounts of his life are uncorroborated, his life as a free man of color is covered to a great degree:

  • A Patriot, he fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill (Breeds Hill) during American Revolutionary War
  • An Abolitionist, he worked with organizations such as the Free African Society to aid many slaves to freedom
  • He drove efforts to end Slavery in Massachusetts in 1783
  • He turned his home into one of the first schools for black children

He and others sought to join the ranks of Freemasonry in Boston but were denied due to the racial climate of the day and age. However, on March 6, 1775, Prince Hall was made a Master Mason in Irish Constitution Military Lodge No. 441 along with fourteen other African Americans.

After the Irish Lodge left American shores, Hall and the others were denied full recognition by the caucasian Grand Lodge of Massachusetts as their power was limited. This prompted them to apply for a charter of their own on March 2, 1784.On September 29, 1784, the Grand Lodge of England granted the charter which would not be delivered until 1787. Prince Hall was the first Master of African Lodge #459.
